Logistically, political leadership is something that a lot of people don’t realize can differ dramatically from nation to nation. In many parts of the world, strict guidelines are set in stone to ensure that one single person doesn’t have the ability to achieve absolute power. Other areas of the world do not have these guidelines in place, however, which often means that dictatorships can result. While dictatorships in and of themselves aren’t necessarily “bad,” they often end up taking this route. Many people will argue that Kim Jong-il did a good job during his many years of leadership over North Korea, although others will just as easily paint a picture of him as being a tyrant. Regardless, Kim Jong-il’s approach to fashion and style was one that definitely left a lot to be desired. The following are just a few things about how the dictator dressed during his time in power, all contributing to the fact that we consider him the 2nd worst dressed dictator of all time.

Safari Suits
The term “safari suit” may not mean a great deal to many people, although this is probably for the best. Kim Jong-il very often embraced this look, wearing full khaki safari suits just about whenever he was in the public eye. Drab and unattractive, the dictator quickly came to be associated with this look, and breaking the association is difficult even after he is no longer in power. More often than not, these suits were so bulky and poorly-fitted that they made him appear as if he was a caricature of himself. For a man who claims to enjoy the finest of western civilization (DVDs, fine liquors etc.), he certainly didn’t dress the part.

Oversized Sunglasses
Living in North Korea, there’s no doubt that a good pair of sunglasses comes in handy. That being said, the shades that Kim Jong-il is so well-known for wearing are far bigger than they should be, ending in an appearance that many people have poked fun at over the years. Kim Jong-il’s massive sunglasses may protect his eyes, but they do little to help his appearance, and are especially unattractive when paired with the safari suits he is known for wearing.

Ill Fitting Hair Cut
Looking at Kim Jong-il’ coif, we are not sure if it is an actual hair cut or a toupee made from a chimp’s pubic hair, but what we do know is that it is a look that couldn’t be more unflattering. The statically loaded hair combined with his far recessed hairline makes his forehead look bigger than that of Ronald McDonald. Needless to say, his hair, safari suits, and ridiculous sunglasses give him the well-deserved #2 spot, almost challenging Muammar Gaddafi, for the worst dressed world leader of all time.

Takeaways for the Modern Man
The modern man must understand that dressing in an attractive manner is one of the most important things that a person in a position who is in a position of power can do for themselves. Oversized sunglasses don’t do anyone any favors, and should thus be avoided. That said, normal-sized sunglasses can be very effective, and are especially attractive on leaders of nations that are located in warm climates. The khaki safari suit, on the other hand, is just a bad idea all around, and is best kept off the backs of those who dabble in politics. Instead, it’s best to take a streamlined approach to fashion, highlighting suits which feature slim, modern cuts. If you’re going to use accessories (sunglasses, for example), be sure to take a minimalist approach and choose your accessories with care.
