Team Malaysia's Poor Fashion Choices at the Olympics

The 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony was truly a sight to be seen; no one will argue against this. Not only was the event itself simply astounding, but some of the fashion that was seen at the event was just incredible and eye-catching; USA, Switzerland and Sweden are just a few nations that truly raised the bar on fashion this year. This being said, there were plenty of countries that simply failed to make their ensembles work, and suffered greatly as a result. Malaysia finds itself very high on the list, having worn a collection of ensembles that simply fell flat. The following are just a few things about why Malaysia’s look didn’t work, as well as what you yourself might want to do in order to avoid having these issues plague your own sense of style. Tiger-Print Yellow
There’s a good chance that Malaysia was trying to get a point across by wearing tiger-print yellow as part of their chosen ensemble. This being said, the print looked nothing short of ridiculous, and really didn’t do a single thing to help push the nation in the right direction in terms of their fashion sense. The print not only showed up in the pants worn by women, but the men wore hats that showcased the print as well. The result was one of the worst cases of clashing attire that has ever been seen at the Olympics, and will certainly go down in history as giving Malaysia a slow start to the competition. Tiger prints may work when you’re trying to shamelessly gain attention to yourself, but certainly not at an Olympic event. Suffice to say, the look did little to highlight Malaysian culture, and could easily be taken as a joke more than anything else.

Drag Orange
As if the tiger-print yellow wasn’t bad enough, Team Malaysia’s ensembles were loaded with drab orange; especially in the “vests” that were worn by men. The orange clashed terribly with the tiger-print yellow pieces that were worn, resulting in a veritable mess that would’ve been extremely difficult to clean up. Perhaps the only element of the ensemble that worked was the combination of black dress pants and shiny black dress shoes; something that most ensembles can benefit from including. Still, there was very little differentiation between the men and women on this team, which made for a combination of ensembles that seemed to blend together in all the wrong ways.

Takeaways for the Modern Man
Instead of incorporating elements of Team Malaysia’s look into your own, you should do as much as possible to avoid making the mistakes that they made. Tiger-print yellow is something that no one can benefit from; it’s a bit of a joke, actually. Things get worse when the print gets combined with clashing colors such as the drab orange that made it into these ensembles, however, which makes it even more obvious that color choices should always be made with extreme care. It should stand to reason that this ensemble wasn’t “believable,” and it showed in many of the athletes’ faces. What you can learn from this is just how important it is to avoid wearing something that you can’t put on with confidence.
