Anyone who pays a great deal of attention to fashion knows that there are certain cities scattered throughout the world that happen to be far more fashionable than most others. Cities such as these are often termed “fashion capitals” for a variety of reasons. Not only do residents tend to pay a great deal of attention to how they dress, but often times some of the best designers in the world will call these cities home, putting out benchmark clothing for both men and women. Milan - one of the largest cities in Italy - certainly finds itself on this list, as the city is home to both forward-thinking designers and exceptionally well-dressed men and women. The following are just a few things about Milan that make it a fashion capital, and why anyone who is interested in fashion can get quite a bit of mileage out of visiting the city at one point or another.

Milan Fashion Week
Milan Fashion Week is, without a doubt, one of the most important events in the global fashion industry each year. Usually held in the months of February/March (Spring/Summer Fashion Week and again in September/October (Fall/Winter Fashion Week), the event draws individuals from all over the world, and is attended not only by those who have a simple interest in fashion, but by high-level industry insiders. Some of the world’s top designers can be found showing their pieces at Milan Fashion Week, and the event has been known to spark more than a few trends since first getting off the ground in 1958; Dolce & Gabbana, Prada and Gucci are just a few high-end designers that are often showcased at Milan Fashion Week. One thing’s for sure; those who attend Milan Fashion Week for the first time are in for a serious treat.

Designers Galore
One reason why Milan is so often considered to be a fashion capital is the fact that it is home to some of the best designers and labels in the world. Stefano Gabbana, Miuccia Prada and Franco Moschino (among others) all call the city home, and are responsible for putting out some of the most incredible designs that the world of fashion has ever seen for both men and women. It should come as no surprise that there are a great deal of boutiques located around Milan; perfect for those who are on vacation and would like to bring home a piece or two to remember their trip by. Just don’t expect shopping for designer clothing in Milan to be any less costly than it might be in any other city in the world! Finally, Milan has one of the oldest shopping malls in the world (see picture above), and some argue that it is in fact the oldest fashion Mall in the world.

What to Expect on a Visit
As with Paris and other fashion capitals, Milan is home to some seriously well-dressed individuals. Walking a busy city street in Milan will usually mean stumbling upon men who wear perfectly-fitted suits (often with pin stripes, as well as 3-piece suits, and paired with trendy slim skinny ties), and women wearing dresses/coats. Younger people tend to dress more casually, although the word “casual” in Milan is not associated with “sloppy” in the way it might be in America.
