Why Sydney Belongs on the TOP10 Worst Dressed City List

There are a lot of wonderful things that Sydney, Australia is known for. The Opera House (pictured), gorgeous weather and a friendly population of residents are just a few reasons why one might want to travel to Sydney more than just every once in awhile. One thing that the city is not at all known for, however, is its fashion sense. Men’s fashion and style in Sydney is certainly nothing worth heralding, and even those who live there are likely to agree. While Australia in general tends to be a bit behind in comparison to Europe and other parts of the world when it comes to fashion and style, Sydney is perhaps the best-known example of this fallback. The following are just a few reasons why fashion and style in Sydney are nothing to write home about, all of which can help to paint a picture of what it’s like to visit the city on any given day.

Warm Climate, Black Suits
There’s nothing wrong with wearing black suits. In fact, the look can be very attractive on most people. That said, the climate in Sydney presents perhaps the worst possible conditions for wearing such pieces. To put it plainly, Sydney is hot, and the black suits that are omnipresent in the city not only cause a disconnect, but make for a very uncomfortable experience for those who wear them regularly. Nevertheless, black suits have become the norm in Sydney for one reason or another, and it is a somewhat unspoken truth that they must be worn by business professionals who live and work in the city. Light, airy suits would be far more conducive to Sydney’s climate, yet they simply aren’t a part of the culture. Those who travel to the city on business should always keep this in mind.

A Lag in Trends
Trends come and go throughout the fashion industry, many of which tend to begin in fashion-forward European cities such as Paris and Milan. For whatever reason, however, these trends tend to take a great deal of time to make it to Sydney. An entire year may pass before the city stumbles upon a trend that made its way through Europe; at this point, it’s probably already faded away. This is not unlike towns and cities located in rural America, which tend to also be quite a bit behind the curve and often have difficulty catching up to what is going on in the world of men’s fashion. While there’s nothing wrong with cities that buck the trend, Sydney simply doesn’t have a strong enough sense of its own style for this to occur.

Poorly-Tailored Dress Shirts
One of the biggest issues for men who live in Sydney is that finding pieces such as dress shirts that are cut properly can be much easier said than done. Poorly-tailored dress shirts are the norm in the city, with many business professionals walking around in pieces that look more like tablecloths than anything else. For reasons that remain a mystery, shopping for well-tailored clothing in Sydney can be an extremely expensive process; at least in comparison to other parts of the world.
